I love a good matchmaking tale in a romance novel. It combines two of my greatest pastimes; romance and pairing off two people who I believe are MFEO (made for each other).
Reading Alix Kelso’s helped me to discover my ideal romantic situation. Falling in love while matchmaking. Not only are you creating romance for others but you are also struggling to keep a lid on your own emotions.
If my loved out ever puts me back out into the market, I want to live out this book’s plot.
Another reason why I was attracted to this book was that it’s the start of a series and I always like to get to a party early.
Here’s the blurb…
Is there ever a perfect moment to begin again in life?
Ever since tragedy threw her life into turmoil, Laura has taken refuge at her waitressing job in Valentino’s restaurant in Glasgow’s leafy Fairhill. Serving lattes and lunch specials means she’s too busy to think about all she lost, or the dreams she was forced to abandon. So when her beloved boss announces she’s selling the business, Laura is devastated. Hatching a plan to set her up with the local pub owner, Laura hopes the two of them will make a connection that might just change her mind.
Recovering from betrayal and heartbreak, Bruce is also in hiding from the world, and working in his uncle’s pub while he wonders how to restart his life. When Laura asks for help with her matchmaking scheme, he finds himself unable to refuse. She has a smile he can’t resist, no matter how much he wants to.
But as their plan is set in motion, the matchmakers begin falling for each other. Yet Laura thinks she’s happy with her dull boyfriend, and Bruce won’t risk another broken heart. As the future of Valentino’s hangs in the balance, can these two lost and lonely people find the perfect moment to start their lives again together?
Here’s my review…
I loved the connection between Laura and Bruce. You can feel the chemistry sizzling early on in the book. If I can create chemistry as good as this in my novel I will be so pleased.
Bruce finds Laura irresistible and I loved how he describes her as a ‘whirlwind.’ That’s exactly what she is.
His smile makes her quiver inside and she can’t understand why he’s always on her mind.
It’s a slow build for these two, although I was hooked on Bruce after a few chapters. He can pull me a pint whenever he likes!
Their matchmaking scheme brings them closer together and I loved this aspect of the book.
Both Laura and Bruce are broken at the start and they have emotional baggage. Their feelings for each other started the healing process and this is what you want from a good romance.
Laura’s boss, Natalie and Bruce’s Uncle Keith are great characters and there was good banter between these two as Laura and Bruce start meddling and matchmaking.
I have to say that John, Laura’s dull boyfriend is very well written. Laura deserves a medal for boring boyfriend bravery.
The suburb of Fairhill is brought to life by the author. There are a few quirky inhabitants of Fairhill and lots of potential for story offshoots. It is a place I want to go back to…soon 🙂
This is a great start to what I think will be a fab series, full of heartwarming and uplifting stories from Fairhill.
3 Things About The Author:
1. Having previously worked as a shop assistant, waitress, hospital cleaner and dishwasher, she eventually became a university lecturer. Although she loved the academic world of teaching and researching and helping her students, she always enjoyed writing stories in her spare time and finally decided to pursue her dream of publishing a novel and becoming a full time writer.
2. She has a rescue lurcher called Maggie.
3. She is a firm believer in the therapeutic benefits of a long lunch with a big glass of wine.
